Sometimes, the target language requires more words than the source language to state an idea. In such cases, Adapt It needs an empty space in the source language so that it can insert additional target text. Such empty spaces are marked with a (…).
To insert a placeholder do the following:
Select the place where the placeholder is needed. Do this by one of these methods
Position the Phrase box at the point where the extra word(s) are needed.
Select a word in the source next to the place where the extra word(s) are needed.
Insert the place holder by using one of the following:
To insert the placeholder before the Phrase box, click the Insert A Placeholder button
in the toolbar
To insert the placeholder after the Phrase box, press Ctrl and on the toolbar click Insert A Placeholder button
Adapt It inserts a placeholder and moves the Phrase box to that location. You can now type the necessary words into the Phrase box. The source text appears as an ellipsis (…).
You can type as many words as necessary into the Phrase box as long as it does not get longer than a single line of the Adapt It window. If you need more space than this, add another placeholder.
If you inserted a placeholder at a place where there is punctuation, Adapt It does not know whether the placeholder belongs to the words that precede it, or the words that follow it. Therefore, Adapt It displays a message to ask you which of those two options is correct. When you click Yes, Adapt It treats the placeholder as part of the words that follow it. If you click No, Adapt It makes the placeholder text part of the previous sentence or clause. Punctuation and SFM indicators are moved appropriately. These changes become visible once you enter text and move the Phrase box.
