Packing and Unpacking Process

The packing and unpacking process allows you to share work with other translators and translation projects. Packing of the document compresses it and all related data into a file so that it can be transferred. You can copy the file onto another computer and then unpack (decompress) it there. Adapt It handles the packing and unpacking process without work on your part. You have to handle transferring the file from one computer to another.

When Adapt It packs a document, it creates a file with the name of the document and a filename extension of aip. This file includes:

You can pack or unpack only one file time at a time. However, you can send many individual files to the destination computer. Each of the files can then be unpacked one by one. Once you have transferred all of the documents, you can use Restore the knowledge base in the File menu to build a new knowledge base.

You can pack and send documents from different projects. When each document is unpacked on the destination machine, Adapt It determines whether or not the project is already on the destination machine. If the project exists, Adapt It puts it there. If not, Adapt It creates a new project folder to receive it.

The Pack Document … and Unpack Document … options on the File menu control the process.

The process consists of three steps:

  1. Pack the current document into an .aip file.

  2. Move the .aip file to the destination computer by some form of removable media or network.

  3. Unpack the .aip file into Adapt It on the destination computer
