NoteAdapt It assists the process of adaptation by automating many of the tedious parts of the work. It speeds up the adaptation process by allowing you to concentrate on the content of the adaptation rather than recording and looking up adaptations of words.
The key to the adaptation process is the use of the Adapt It Knowledge Base. The knowledge base stores source words and phrases along with one or more target language adaptation for each source entry. As a result, Adapt It can look up each word or phrase in the source text and supply an adaptation for that word or phrase. See Retrieving words and phrases from the knowledge base for more information. When Adapt It encounters a word or phrase without an entry in the knowledge base, it waits for you to supply the adaptation. Adapt It then stores your response in the knowledge base for future use when the word is encountered again. As a result, the knowledge base becomes "smarter" as more text is adapted.
Normally Adapt It builds an empty knowledge base when you create a new project and you have to supply all of the adaptations. Thus at the beginning the adaptation process is relatively slow (See the note below). However, as the knowledge base gets smarter, things speed up.
Depending on the status of your project, you can use one of adaptation modes:
Automatic mode process -- to enter adaptations quickly
Single step mode process -- for checking entries and careful entries of adaptations once the knowlede base is relatively complete
NoteIf some adaptation work has already been done in Shoe Box, Tool Box or some other translation software using Standard Format Markers, the building of the knowledge base can be speeded up. You can import dictionary txt files from these programs and prepopulate the knowledge base. Prepopulating the knowledge base is simply the process of importing knowledge base entries before beginning the adaptation process in Adapt It.
If you do not have a dictionary already created, it is not beneficial to create one in Shoe Box or Tool Box. The effort to build one is better spent in doing adapting in Adapt It. In fact, the Adapt It knowledge base might be useful as the basis for building a dictionary in one of those other applications. See Exporting the Knowledge Base .
